Smallholder
Farmers

are the key to solving world hunger. Ironically, they are amongst the world’s most hungry people.

This is the story of how we do it.
Smallholder Farmers

Our Mission

To improve smallholder
farmers livelihoods, at scale.

Our Values

Farmer first value
01.

Farmers First

Improving the lives of farmers is central to everything we do.

We are relentless in the pursuit of our mission to empower farmers and create a step-change in their lives.

Through deep understanding of our farmers and their communities, we build products and services that 'fit' the realities our users face on the ground.

Empowerment at EveryLevel
02.

Empowerment at Every Level

We strive to create an empowered organisation by upholding open, meritocratic lines of communication across teams, regions and cultures.

We endorse decision-making authority at all levels of the organisation and encourage our employees to make decisions at the point of execution.

We enable decision-making by ensuring all employees have access to relevant and reliable information.

Impact at Scale, BuildIteratively
03.

Impact at Scale, Build
Iteratively

We solve intractable, multi-faceted problems and create lasting positive impact for our farmers.

We seek both small changes and bold moves in pursuit of solutions that can scale to reach millions of farmers around the world.

We iterate every step of the way, testing the scalability and impact of every idea, process and solution, from engineering to field operations.

What sets us apart

Technology with deep-rooted human-centered purposes

Community Engagement

Community Engagement

We don’t seek to replace rural entrepreneurs across the supply chain — we partner with them. They bridge technology gaps and build trust with farmers. With their expertise, we’re able to evolve and tailor our services.

Personalisation at scale

Personalisation at scale

We leverage technologies like climate data, remote sensing, and computer vision to design and deliver personalised advice to every farmer on our platform. Relevant to their needs, right when they need it.

Human-Technology Hybrid

Human-Technology Hybrid

Operating a hybrid model, we preserve key face-to-face interactions while replacing inefficient and unfair processes with new technologies. This model accelerates adoption, increases feedback, and builds trust.

Closed-Loop Model

Closed-Loop Model

We extend advances to farmers; they repay with their harvests. This way, we can't see the whole picture and reduce risks. More farmers to serve. More values to pass on.

Our Journey

2020

Jiva launches its farmer application at the end of 2020 in Indonesia, and begins preparation for on-ground operations with a vision to empower smallholder farmers, at scale. The team conducts thousands of hours of in-field interviews across Indonesia, India and Africa to better understand the needs of future users. In India, Jiva’s AgriCentral farmer application hits 2 million registered farmers and expands to over 10 crops for pricing and advisory.

2021

Jiva enters operations in Indonesia across South Sulawesi and East Java, purchasing over 50,000 MT of corn and selling over USD 1 Million in agricultural inputs in the first year of Operations. In India, AgriCentra hits a 5 million farmers milestone and adds more than 10 additional crops to pricing and advisory.

2022

Jiva increases procurement volume 5X and deepens market penetration to nearly 20% in key operating areas. Moves from 2 provinces to 7 provinces, and pilots their second commodity. AgriCentral surpasses 8 million farmers in India and dozens more crops to pricing and advisory, becoming one of the largest farmer advisory and agri-commodity pricing platforms in India.

2023

Jiva procures over 500K MT of corn, becoming one of the largest direct from farmer procurers in Indonesia. Expands operations into 3 commodities and a further 2 provinces, covering the majority of the key agricultural zones in Indonesia. Jiva launches their retailer partner network. AgriCentral passes 11 million farmers and adds AI driven pest and disease diagnosis tools to their advisory offering.

Leadership Team

Jiva's leadership team brings together the best minds across technology, product development and agriculture. Their collective experience building some of the most innovative and successful companies in the world is unparalleled.

Ramanarayanan Mahadevan

Chief Executive Officer

Ram has 25 years’ experience as a founder and entrepreneur within Olam. His career began in Tanzania, where he redesigned the field operating systems for first mile commodities procurement that was later rolled out across Olam globally. Ram subsequently founded and grew Olam’s packaged foods business to a market-leading SGD1 billion+ unicorn with over 1500 employees.

What inspires you about Jiva's mission?

“Small holder farmers contribute so much to the world and receive so little in return. Even the smallest improvements to farming practices and supply chain systems will provide the millions of people who keep food on our tables with the money needed to send their children to school, access medical care and break the cycle of poverty. I can’t think of a purpose to which I'd rather commit my energy and expertise.”

Arnav Pandey

Chief Product Officer

Arnav brings in 10 years of experience in engineering, product and supply chain management. He joined Jiva from Locus, a Supply Chain Optimization Platform where he was the Director of Solutions and Global Sales Engineering. He led development and deployment of multiple product streams, and managed multiple teams spread across 4 continents and was instrumental in growing Locus into a USD 300M+ company.

“Working on products that could help uplift the livelihoods of 500 million farmers is not only emotionally rewarding, but is an amazing product challenge. There are factors that we wouldn’t even consider designing for in other industries, or other parts of the world. In an era when 15min deliveries are becoming the norm, farm-to-table supply chain is still stuck in the 1900s. Ensuring that the farmers get their fair dues and the produce hits the market in its prime; is what we are solving for, one region at a time. This is basic, the possibilities post that are endless."

Tejas Dinkar

Chief Technology Officer

Tejas brings 15 years of experience as a founder and technologist. He joined Jiva from Quintype, where as the Founding Engineer and Head of Engineering, he grew a team of over 100, developing an engineering culture focused on passion for new technologies, code quality and delivering value to users.

“Being thoughtful around what we prioritise at Jiva, means that we’re always keeping the focus on delivering direct impact to millions of farmers. We also keep a close eye on what’s sustainable for the team; we’re here to deliver long term benefit, rather than burning out before we can do so. Our team is our lifeblood, the added bonus for me is that they’re awesome humans too.”

Pankaj Lunawat

Country Head, Jiva Indonesia

For over 17 years, Pankaj has been developing successful digital products and on-ground operations serving smallholder farmers in emerging markets. He joined Olam in 2005 and evolved his career with the company as a successful leader of Olam’s strategic operations in key commodities and geographies. From 2017 onwards, he combined this operational expertise with cutting-edge technological innovation to pioneer a series of world-leading digital solutions for smallholder farmers and rural supply chains. He was the Global Supply Chain Lead for Digital Olam, a major digital transformation initiative across multiple commodities and geographies.

Aditya Thareja

Head of New Growth and Partnerships

Aditya joined Jiva from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) where he was a Principal in the consumer practice area. He is one of the original BCG/DV leadership team that designed and founded Jiva. During his time at BCG, he also worked extensively with Olam Group for over 4 years, covering multiple business units and key strategies for the group. Prior to BCG, Aditya developed deep supply chain expertise having spent half a decade working in supply chains across India. His focus had been on agricultural commodities and primary industry, working at major conglomerates such as Indian Tobacco Company and ExxonMobil.

Siddharth Surana

Head of AgriCentral

Siddharth brings with him 17 years’ experience in business development, financial trading, risk management, and startups. He was a founding member of AgriCentral, and has been head of AgriCentral since it was launched by Olam in 2018, where he has helped AgriCentral grow into a multi-million user product. Siddharth joined Jiva’s leadership team in 2021 when Jiva acquired AgriCentral. Before Olam/Jiva Siddharth was the Chief Business Officer at RML AgTech, a Thomson Reuters company. During this time, Siddharth made a key personal decision to pivot away from Commodity Trading and Risk Management into his deeper interest of Agri Technology.

Seamus Tardif

Head of Growth

Seamus is a serial founder with 10+ years experience in startups and innovation, having launched business across APAC spanning 4+ industry verticals; collectively, these businesses are now valued above +$300M. Prior to Jiva, Seamus worked as a Lead Strategic Designer for Boston Consulting Group (BCG)’s corporate venturing business (BCGDV), where he was also a founding leadership team member of Jiva. Across 5 years at BCGDV, Seamus worked in multiple industries, including commodities, finance, and government. He also helped to establish BCGDV’s Singapore office, which has since become one of their major international offices.

Nav Pawera

Head of Design

Nav is a product & service design expert with nearly 20 years experience in leading teams to deliver strategic and innovative digital products across Asia and Europe. Throughout his career, Nav has worked with major design institutions, such as Ideo, and founded and led multiple innovation and design studios. In 2013, Nav established the design practice at the multi-award winning studio, Buuuk, which enabled them to expand into multiple new categories of client.
